Studying, Collecting and Displaying Hans Memling in Poland and Italy

In autumn 2014, the Scuderie del Quirinale inaugurated the exhibition, Hans Memling. Rinascimento Fiammingo exploring the role of Mediterranean commissioners of Hans Memling’s workshop in Bruges. The exhibition highlighted artistic exchanges between Flanders and Italy in the fifteenth century, including observations on the Triptych of the Last Judgment, now in the National Museum in Gdańsk.

A decade later, this seminar reassesses the impact of the exhibition’s research and examines future directions in Memling studies. It addresses not only the sources of Memling’s commissions and patrons but also the fortuna critica of his artworks—their reception over time—and conservation efforts by museums. This revision provides outputs for future research and initiatives, particularly concerning the Triptych of the Last Judgment. Originally intended for a chapel in Badia Fiesolana near Florence, the triptych was never displayed in Italy. The seminar seeks to promote further study and dissemination of knowledge about this masterpiece with perspectives on its artistic, historical, and conservation-related aspects.
