In the second half of March, as part of the Women's Side of Poetry, or Through Poems to Language project, another workshop will be held for students from Italy, Lithuania and Ukraine. Poets Krystyna Dabrowska and Malgorzata Lebda, whose works will be translated from Polish into the students' national languages of Italian, Lithuanian and Ukrainian, have announced their attendance.
This time the workshop will be held in a hybrid mode: at the university for Sapienza students and online for students from Lithuania and Ukraine. The first of the meetings, which will be hosted by Prof. Luigi Marinelli on March 18, will be held with the participation of Krystyna Dabrowska, poet, translator and essayist, author of the poetry collections The Travel Office (third prize in the Third National Literary Contest "Golden Mean of Poetry" in 2007), White Chairs (Awarded to. Wislawa Szymborska in 2013 and the Koscielski Foundation Award), Sound Paths (Warsaw City Literary Award in the poetry category in 2019), Time and Aperture, City with Indu (Kazimierz Hoffman "Kos" Poetry Award in 2023).
The next workshop, scheduled for March 22, will be led by La Sapienza University doctoral students Serena Buti and Lida Ricci. Their guest will be Malgorzata Lebda, editor, academic (PhD in humanities and audiovisual arts, teaches at the Jagiellonian University), columnist, cultural animator, author of six books of poetry, including The Dreams of the Uckermärkers (Gdynia Literary Award in 2019) and Mer de Glace (Wislawa Szymborska Award in 2022) and her debut novel, Greedy, implementer of the activist-poetry project Reading Water. Her books have been published in translation into Czech (translated by Bogdan Trojak), Italian (translated by Marina Ciccarini), Serbian (translated by Biserka Rajčić), Ukrainian (translated by Yury Zavadsky), Slovenian (translated by Katarina Šalamun-Biedrzycka), Danish (translated by Frej Larsen and Pawel Partyka), and Romanian (Marina Ilie).
Translation workshops are a special opportunity for young Polish scholars to collaborate internationally with each other, meet with prominent literary and translation scholars and deepen their translation skills. In 2022, one of the participants of such meetings - the Autumn Workshop with "Geopolonistics" in Warsaw, which brought male and female students with their mentors from Lithuania, Italy and Ukraine - was Anna Zotova, a Polish Studies student at Volyn's Lesia Ukrainka National University in Lutsk. Today, she is a visual artist, poet and translator of contemporary Polish literature, including Przemyslaw Suchanecki's debut volume Wtracenie and 112 by Emilia Konwerska. This year, by the decision of the Wislawa Szymborska Foundation, as part of the Literary Residency at Wislawa Szymborska's apartment, Anna Zotova will work on the translation into Ukrainian of Malgorzata Lebda's novel, Lakome, considered one of the best books of 2023.
