The following is a post from the Polish Studies Bulletin website, in which Prof. Regina Jakubėnas of Vilnius University shares her impressions of the project events that took place in Rome on 20-22.11.2023.
The project is implemented by the PAS Station in Rome, together with the Institute of European, American and Intercultural Studies at "La Sapienza" University, the Polish Studies Center of Vilnius University, the Department of Polish Studies and Translation at Volyn National University named after Lesa Ukrainka and the Institute of Literary Research of the PolishAcademy of Sciences, under the Polish Language Promotion Program(NAWA - National Agency for Academic Exchange).
the Center On the first day, the translation workshop "Nothing Twice. On the essence and practice of translation, which was conducted for the students by the eminent Italian polonist Prof. Andrea Ceccherelli of the University of Bologna, among others, translator of poetry by Wislawa Szymborska, Czeslaw Milosz, Jan Twardowski, Zbigniew Herbert and others, and author of a book on Wislawa Szymborska. As an aside, it should be mentioned that Prof. Andrea Ceccherelli is the author of a monograph on PeterSkarga (From Surius to Skarga: A Comparative Study of the "Lives of the Saints," 2003). The classes with Prof. Ceccherelli were a great opportunity for students to learn about or improve their skills as literary translators. During the workshop, students from the three countries not only listened to the lecture, but also attempted to compare translations of Szymborska's poems in Italian, Lithuanian and Ukrainian themselves. These exercises allowed them to see the great role of the translator in literary translation and how differently the same poetic work can be interpreted by different translators. An additional highlight of the workshop was the visit of scholars - researchers of Szymborska's works from Poland: Prof. Teresa Walas, Prof. Michał Rusinek, Prof. Wojciech Ligęza and Prof. Tomasz Bilczewski, who came to Rome to participate in an international conference on Wisława Szymborska.
Students and faculty from the three universities mentioned above are also participating.
Phase I of the project took place in Rome and was implemented in several locations.
In the second half of the day, the project participants traveled to "La Sapienza" University to attend the opening of the international scientific conference "Szymborska e" and the exhibition "Szymborska e il mondo-collage" at MLAC-Museo Laboratorio d'Arte Conteporanea.
The opening was attended by numerous guests, who filled the hall. One of the elements of the program was the recitation of Szymborska's poem Utopia in Polish, Italian and Ukrainian by participants of the Women's Side of Poetry project - Italian and Ukrainian students.
On the second day of the project, participants traveled to the headquarters of Radio Kaos Italy in Italy, where they participated in a podcasting workshop. The young and very enthusiastic founders and employees of Radio Kaos Italy shared their own experience in podcast creation, including the technical side. After the theoretical part, podcasts were realized with three students from Italy, Lithuania and Ukraine. The radio workshop was held with the participation of the irreplaceable translator, Ms. Marta Koral.
In the afternoon, project participants had a tour of Rome in Polish footsteps, led by Maciej Mroczkowski. During the excursion, which lasted several hours, we mainly visited the main sites related to Polish history and culture, including St. Andrew's Church on the Quirinal, which houses the relics of St. Stanislaus Kostka, we saw the plaque of Cyprian Kamil Norwid at Via Sistina 123, reached the Palazetto Zuccari palace, to which the Spanish Steps lead. This palace was the home of the Polish Queen Marysieńka - Marie Kazimiera de la Grange d'Arquien (1674-1696), wife of John III Sobieski. We then walked along Via dei Condotti street, where the famous Caffe Greco cafe is located - a meeting place for writers, including Polish writers, and arrived at viale Adamo Mickievicz. The tour ended on a hill, where from Terraza del Pincio we could admire the beautiful Piazza del Popolo and the panorama of the Eternal City - one of the most beautiful views of Rome. Many thanks for the excellently thought-out tour and the extremely interesting narration of the tour guide, Mr. Maciej, during which the students could not only admire the beauty of the Eternal City, but also learn about the places where the greatest Polish writers stayed and worked.
On the last day of the project, the participants went to the Polish Institute in Rome (Istituto Polacco di Roma), whose headquarters are located in Palazzo Blumenstihl at Via Vittoria Colonna 1. It should be added that as of 2019, this beautiful palace built in the late 19th century in the Neo-Renaissance style houses the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the Italian Republic.
The conference guests were welcomed by Adrianna Siennicka, director of the Polish Institute in Rome. Participants of the project were able to listen to papers and discussions by well-known Italian and Polish researchers of Wisława Szymborska's works: Prof. Wojciech Ligęza, Prof. Tomasz Bilczewski, Prof. Giovanna Tomassucci, Prof. Luca Bernardini, Prof. Sergio Maifredi, the most prominent Italian Polish scholar, Prof. Luigi Marinelli of "La Sapienza" University, and the wonderful Prof. Monika Wozniak of the same university - a member of the scientific committee of the "Szymborska e" conference and one of the initiators of the "Feminine Side of Poetry" project, an outstanding translator of Polish literature into Italian and Italian literature into Polish, including the author of translations into Polish of works by Umberto Eco, Oriana Fallaci and Andrea Camilleri and into Italian of poems by Jan Brzechwa, Julian Tuwim and others.
The participation of the students of the Vilnius University Polish Studies Center in the international project The Feminine Side of Poetry was not only an intellectual adventure and a chance to participate in the biggest celebrations organized in the Year of Wislawa Szymborska, but also an opportunity to visit "La Sapienza" - one of the largest and oldest Italian universities, and a chance to establish contacts and integrate with students from Italy and Ukraine.
The next stage of the Women's Side of Poetry project will be translations of Wislawa Szymborska's poems made by project participants and their publication.
