Anna KLIMKIEWICZ, a scholar of Italian Literature, associated professor of the Institute of Romance Philology of the Jagiellonian University of Cracow. Specializes in early Italian literature and perception of Middle Ages in the field of humanistic and renaissance literature, she has published dozens of articles on the chivalrous romance in Italy, the early Italian poetry, including translations and old prints. She is the author of the volume on Le Viteby Giorgio Vasari, a comprehensive dissertation on Ariosto's Orlando Furioso: Od błędu do utopii. Śladami Orlanda Szalonego (2009), as well as translations of The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli. Recently the monograph on Hypnerotomachia Poliphili by Francesco Colonna was published (2015), including Polish translation of fragments of this work
Summary
Published in 1499 in Venice, Hypnerotomachia Poliphili is a masterpiece of art and typography of all time. The most original work of the Italian Renaissance has remained a book for the initiated – with its hermetic love story, visions of the ancient past interwoven with glimpses of fifteenth-century Italy, res occultae secrets with highest achievements of classical culture. It is the image of Renaissance philosophy and art, its aesthetics, symbols and values. In her speech, Anna Klimkiewicz presents the results of her research on Hypnerotomachia and interprets the work, which requires reading the encoded messages, full of puzzles and mysteries. The research focuses on the trends in the literature of the Italian Quattrocento, especially on syncretic culture, which unite the different traditions and philosophical sources, particularly Classical, Italian and Oriental culture.
