Ep. 18: The royal traveller. The Italian journeys of Stanisław August Poniatowski's nephew

Already half a century ago, dr Elżbieta Budzińska managed to identify the diary of the king's nephew and favourite, Stanisław Poniatowski, from his second Italian journey, and yet it still holds many secrets. Thanks to the research of dr Marzena Królikowska-Dziubecka of the Polish Institute of World Art Studies, we now know more and more about the traveller himself, his political, social and economic views, but also about his companions. The political and travel diary of an unknown author is currently stored at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. It is a manuscript written in French, by several people, containing personal notes with corrections made by the prince himself. The companions on the prince's journey were Wiktor Gołuchowski, major Jan Henryk Müntz (probably as a draughtsman), and the English secretary and physician Lust. After Müntz's departure, the prince was accompanied on Sicily by an Italian artist whose character has not yet been deciphered. The brief entries under the daily dates show the traveller's versatility and his extraordinary gift for commenting on the places he visited, in true reporter style. The diary is an extremely detailed document, full of various descriptions and references to a great many places and characters, enriching our knowledge of the royal family and the era in which the travellers lived.
